Establishing Bulgarian Language Competency Testing
Step 1: Registration

Students living in many different states across the United States may apply for establishing Bulgarian Language Competency Testing ALTA. Tests must take place on public district site in ALL of the following states:

Step 2: Paying for Assessments
REGISTRATION FEES: Bulgarian – ALTA Writing & Speaking
The Bulgarian School of Seattle manages the assessment process so that students from multiple districts in USA have opportunities to take or retake the assessment(s) required to demonstrate proficiency.
Step 4: Reporting Results
Results are available within a few days of submitting. After the oral exams are complete, student credits can be calculated. Students need a minimum of a speaking and writing test to earn credits – unless the language has no written form. Students receive credit based on their lowest skill score, since this reflects their proficiency in Bulgarian language.
Step 5: Continue to Increase your Literacy
Possible reasons that students continue to study the heritage language after completing the program
1. The large scale immigration from Bulgaria is a real phenomenon. Bulgarians are a visible and increasing part of American society. Possibly by today, there are around 1 million Bulgarians living in the U.S., of whom 80% are U.S.-born. A substantial majority of them are concentrated in large metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Washington, DC.

Socio- economic integration: Developing bilingual skills is important for the first generation immigrants since that fact have affected their own placement on the labor market in the host country and affects, via inter generational transmission, the educational attainment of following generations. Education is strictly related to earnings and because language proficiency is correlated to other individual characteristics that are positively valued in the labor market in the USA.
4. “Ethnic capital”: The quality of the ethnic environment in which children are raised.
5. Bilateral Economic Relations: Bulgaria is a reliable ally in an area of strategic importance to the United States. On any given day, there are approximately 7,000 Americans in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is a member of the European Union. U.S. companies conduct business across the major industry sectors. Bulgaria and the United States belong to a number of the same international organizations, including the United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization. Bulgaria also is an observer to the Organization of American States.
