BULGARIAN FOR HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS (HLLs)
Elementary, Middle & High School Program
The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and its members encourage learning environments that support heritage speakers of languages other than English. The heritage language programs provided by the Bulgarian School of Seattle for heritage speakers (those raised in an environment where the Bulgarian language was most likely spoken in the home), ensure the academic success of learners by providing:
- challenging curriculum that builds upon the existing linguistic skills and the cultural heritage and knowledge of the students, and that reflects the fact that the needs of heritage students are often significantly different from non-native and non-heritage speakers;
- assessments that integrate language, culture and literature for all students Pre-K through 12th;
- opportunities for heritage speakers to become involved in the Bulgarian language community beyond the classroom; and
- systems to award credit or appropriate placement for oral and written proficiency and prior learning for Bulgarian heritage speakers.

BULGARIAN FOR NON-HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS (NHLLs)
COMMUNICATIVE BULGARIAN
Middle, High School & Adult Program
Bulgarian School of Seattle provides language training to students interested in learning Bulgarian. This program may be accessed nationwide by students and non-students of our school. Our Bulgarian language courses emphasize spoken Bulgarian. Class time stresses communication in the language in everyday situations and invites students to begin speaking from the first day of class. The emphasis of the non-heritage Bulgarian classes is on conversation; however, we also work on listening, reading and writing since these four skills are essential to language acquisition.
Bulgarian School of Seattle offers on campus and online mode of training for this language program. For detailed information about this program including schedule, curriculum, online registration form,etc., please click on the links provided above.
